Welcome!

Welcome to the Simple English Wikibooks!

We hope you are happy editing here. Some helpful pages to start you off are Wikibooks:Community Portal and Help:Contents.

If you want to meet and talk with other members, you can visit the Simple English Wikibooks Simple talk. Just remember that you should sign your messages on Talk pages by typing "~~~~" (four tildes) at the end of your words. It is a good idea to look at the rules before you make many changes.

At the moment, we only have, according to the stats, only 14 active editors -- and that includes bots and things, so please, please, please try and stay!

See you round,

Microchip08 21:16, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

I'd just like to say thankyou for doing everything you have done. Is there any particular task you are doing, so we can both work on it together & get it done as quickly as possible? 86.168.26.212 Well, now you know my IP... Microchip08 16:39, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Another quick note: When categorising pages, please use the slightly longer version of categories, for example, if tagging Biology/Systems/Immune System, you should write </tt> instead of just </tt>. This stops everything under the category from being sorted under "B" for Biology instead of "I" for Immune System.
If you want to copy-paste the category tags, will work as well, automagically filling in the name. Thanks, Microchip08 16:50, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Its really no problem. I like doing maintance and there is here still a lot I can do. I didn't know that way of category tags but I will use them now. I wan't to clean all list with pages, templates and categorys that doesn't have a category yet. I was thinking about asking Import rights also, so I can import some templates that aren't here yet. How do you think about that? Abigor 00:23, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Sounds good. On a side note, Main Page/Sandbox/3 is my new draft of the Main Page, adding links to Wikibooks that I missed out before. What do you think I should put in the empty icons at the bottom that are left over? I was thinking maybe links to policies, but I am not sure. Ideas? Microchip08 14:15, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

I like your draft. I would change to 9 boxes on the bottom in the nine sisterprojects. Because on top of that you have all language where in Wikibooks is available. Abigor 20:34, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

The problem is that I only have 6 spare boxes. Microchip08 20:36, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
You might also find AutoWikiBrowser useful if you want to do lots of tedious edits. Microchip08 (talk) 15:56, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
I know about AWB but I prefer to edit by hand :) Abigor 18:21, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Welcome vs. Anon

Just to let you know, you should use Template:Welcome for logged in users, and Template:Anon for IPs. Microchip08 (talk) 21:18, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I was looking for template:Welcomeip since I couldn't find that one I choose to use the normal welcome template. Thanks for pointing me in the directing for the right template. I will redirect template to the other)Abigor 22:19, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes check.svg Done Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 22:20, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. Abigor 22:33, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Congrats!

You are now an admin. Congrats! Maximillion Pegasus 02:02, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Abigor, you may know this from other wikis where you wield the mop and bucket, but as an administrator you are allowed into #wikimedia-admin, a cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. You can come to #wikimedia and ask for an invite.
Any admin from any project is welcome. It is a good place for cross-wiki coordination of vandal and spam fighting. It is also useful for new admins to contact more experienced admins in real-time to get help with the more complicated admin tasks such as history merges/splits and importing via Special:Import.
Please translate the interface at betawiki: rather than on your local wiki, and to upload images at commons: rather than locally as well (when possible). Regards, Sj 02:10, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much. (and I knew about the irc channels already :P )Abigor 05:20, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey!

Ok, MC8 got me over here (again)!

Congrats on the mop btw, i'm sure you will be fine!

Sooo... have you got any tips and/or jobs in the back end (its where i'm best!).

Also, if I propose some interface changes and they are accepted would you implement them?

Thanks,

BG7even 23:04, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

(TPS): Interface changes aren't really required. It would be nice to have, but really we should all be concentrating on mainspace, and attracting users. @Abigor: I was thinking of moving all the discussion pages (deletion, RfA, ST) into one page: having them all spread out means more pages to check on a regular basis. Thoughts? Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 23:06, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
It's a fair point - I might go and do it at betawiki. I'm just thinking though that a lot of the language isn't in simple english (contributions, changes etc).
As for your comment @Abigor, I think it would be a good idea for such a small project. Best, BG7even 23:09, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Betawiki won't let you. Been there, tried that Wink.png. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 23:10, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Its possible to changes the interface locally, Only for translations you should go to betawiki. But I think the simple talk is the best place to discuss things like that. About the back end we have a lot of work with templates, category's and pages that aren't in a Category. Microchip en me did more than 500 already, but there is still a lot of work left :) Abigor 05:27, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Lol ok ;) My bad :P In that case, i'll gather some ideas, post them on the relevant MediaWiki talk: pages, and then post all of those to Simple Talk for further discussion ;)
Ok, well i'll go through uncategorised pages and cat them up, and then just go through all the pages looking at how they can be improved and stuff ;) And of course i'll also do some writing, though my primary work will be improving the wiki in the back-end, and vandal fighting ;) BG7even 12:25, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
As a sidenote, our equivelent to VIP is actually WB:RFA sort of, same page, though! Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 13:00, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Ok, cheers. BG7even 13:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Deleting Wikibooks

Before deleting a wikibook itself, remember to get rid of the red link on the Main Page. I've put Critical Thinking as a redirect to make sure it's still a bluelink, until we can redesign the Main Page. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 10:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Site Notice

Actually, it was slow for everyone. I'd put it into the Site Notice as a bid for transparency ;-). Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 20:32, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

I was active on Meta and nl.wiki but no speedproblems by me. So not everybody has the speed problems. Abigor 21:15, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for your welcome note. Mmxx 15:55, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Bot template

Do we need this? We don't have many bot requests as it is, and we have no bureaucrats to carry out maintanence of a RfBOT page. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 22:43, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

What do you mean? Abigor 22:44, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Never mind, I was thinking that Template:Bot was for a different reason to what it actually is. Sorry for interuppting you. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 22:53, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok, no problem. Abigor 23:15, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Woah

Taking Meta guidelines as a guide, bots should only do interwiki links or uncontroversial edits: a welcome bot is not one of those; please bring it up on WB:ST before continuing to automagically welcome users -- would you rather be welcomed by a bot, or an actual human? A bot can run at any time they like, but humans give the impression that the wiki is active. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 10:34, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

And since there have been no vote about your meta bot policy we didn't accept. So I run a welcome bot (like a lot of other wikis) with 1 edit a minute. I will make the message more personal. But I will not stop it just because you don't like it. Abigor 21:00, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Where is the harm in opening it up for community discussion? At the moment, basing it on guidelines on several wikis, it is an unapproved bot. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 21:25, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
I see this as a community discussion, I can place a request on the simple talk but then only you will respond also. My bot is doing no harm. Abigor 22:06, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
In which case, we are at a deadlock. Your bot cannot differentiate between vandals and legit. users, can it? Could you give links to the wikis that have welcome bots, and their community discussion? Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 22:08, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
I agree with Microchip08. You should have asked the community first before just going and doing something without their approval. Yet another lapse in judgement. Razorflame 20:47, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Woah, Woah, WOAH.

What's with the flag removal? Wikibooks needs you. Regards, Microchip08 (talk) 20:18, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree! You shouldn't stop. :( TheAE talk 20:43, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Blacklist

Just thinking that prehaps salting is better than blacklisting, as it is more easily undone. On a side note, I've added a few skins to the gadget section of prefs if you want to try some out (I reccommend the dynamic menus). Microchip08 20:02, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Protecting is indeed more easy than blacklisting, but now that it is blacklisted we could created a error message why it isn't possible to create that page that wouldn't be possible by just protecting it.. I am still searching wich files we need to edit to create costum error messages.
I will check out some of the new themes, but I need to be on a desktop computer for that the aren't working on a PDA.
Abigor 20:26, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Welcome

Thank you for the welcome! I noticed that rollback was activated here recently and it would be quite useful for me as I regularly monitor recent changes on this wiki on IRC. Please can I have it? Thanks. SUL 20:21, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

 • Yes check.svg Done Thanks for helping out Abigor 03:46, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

IPBE

Hi, just wanted to let you know i removed you from the IP block exemption user group because sysops get this automatically, also IIRC you have global IPBE. Hope you don't mind. Cheers, Tempodivalse [talk] 22:09, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Oops. It's been pointed out to me that IPBE has extra features not packaged by default with sysop status. As such, I've granted you the flag back. Apologies. Tempodivalse [talk] 21:51, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
